All tracks written, arranged and produced by Lorenzo Feliciati, (except "Free Bird", written by Lorenzo Feliciati and Désirée Petrocchi)
Upon My Head is the new album from Italian bass player Lorenzo Feliciati. The CD opens with Free Bird introducing you Lorenzo's bass groove & Davide Aru on Lead Guitar. Desiree Petrocchi features on lead and background vocals adding to this great uplifting track. Lucrezio de Seta's constantly shifting drumming keeps your foot tapping and head nodding. Horses features Lorenzo on upright bass on the intro in this African cross jazz feel. Lorenzo's use of harmonics really mixes beautifully with the tribal chanting. Listening to the upright bass panning through the left and electric bass panning through the right keeps your ears busy and wanting to rewind to catch what you may have missed. Don't Ask Me To Dance opens with strings flooding the song and providing an extremely dramatic feel. Again Lorenzo's takes lead on bass with Aidan Zammit on piano & accordion adding to the drama. Ground To Air follows and is a track that features Lorenzo going solo not only on bass but almost erie sampling. Not one to listen to on your own late a night Dedicated which Lorenzo donated to Bass Tech UK's As One charity CD is a dedication to one of his bass hero's Jaco Pastorius. I'm always really interested to see how other musicians approach songs of their inspirations and Lorenzo doesn't just simply play Jaco style as a lot of musicians do, he really infuses Jaco's influence into his own the music. The tracks ends on a beautiful melodic and atmospheric feel leaving you all warm and relaxed. Lorenzo's electronica feel again in Nine to five with Lucrezio de Seta driving the track along again with this manic use of every available skin to his disposal. You get a sense that this rythmic madman doesn't take any prisoners and must have forearms and calf muslces not disimilar to Popeye. I wonder if he carries a few cans of spinach in his drum cases?? This leads into Alice (a lullaby) which leaves you feeling relax with Emanuele Simimmo featuring on percussion and Giampiero Grani's twinkling starlight & atmospheric keyboard. Lorenzo's use of the an extremely low bottom end onlys adds to the soothing qualities of this track and ends the CD in perfect style. One
thing throughout the CD you notice is Lorenzo's sound. You get a real
feel for Lorenzo's experimenting with technique, use of the bass as a
whole and not limiting himself to just simply grooving and soloing. He
makes full use of technology and his talent to give each track it's own
identity. One thing that caught my eye on the CD cover was the location
of the recording... 'Recorded during 2003 everywhere and whenever possible'.
This statement really defines his music, influences and makes the CD more
or a story than just a collection of tracks. Reviewed by Gary Lowe, www.basstech.uk.net |
